Leslie
Rae Wermers was born June 7, 1967 in Algona, Iowa. She was raised in Burt,
Iowa and graduated from Burt
High School in 1985 and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls in 1987. She then
received a Mortuary Science Degree from the Dallas Institute of Funeral
Service. Leslie held many positions; she became a jailor for Crow Wing
County and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department, was a camp
counselor in Brainerd and worked as a funeral director in Houston, Texas,
and later as a dispatcher for the Houston Police Department.
She volunteered her time with the Jaycees and as a 'Big Sister'. After becoming too ill to continue working, she redirected her limited
energies and seemingly tireless enthusiasm into the mission of patient help
by co-founding, with her sister, the 'Minnesota Lymefighter's Advocacy'.
Wermers died November 2, 2008, of complications stemming from
Lyme disease and other tickborne infections.
"Leslie’s death
leaves a deep hole in my heart and in so many others. Her indomitable spirit
and passion for life were equaled only by her anger at the injustices
wrought by Lyme ignorance and her dedication to help heal. May this be a
lesson–and Leslie’s legacy–for all of us." -Andy Abrahams Wilson
